NEWSLETTER #12                              GRAMMA'S HUGS INTERNATIONAL

Well, we did it! The remodeling is finished and we are "more or less" settled into the new facilities. It is truly wonderful!!! It turned out just like I knew it would, and is going to be so much more functional, "GHI friendly", and give us more work room; more meeting room; and more adjustable storage space for GHI items.

Special thanks go to my son-in-law, Kevin Brown; my nephew, Glenn Easley, for their construction and tireless work on the finishing of the remodel work primarily done by Cordell Rees, a master craftsman. "Hugs Helpers", Matthew Brown, (grandson) and his girlfriend, Sarah Crozier, who painted  and painted...inside and outside! And thanks for everyone who helped with the moving, adjusting and extra work on the files (like Juanda Schatz and KatyLue White)...

Since we last wrote "Gramma" drove Hattie Hugmobile to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to attend a national conference of Catholic Daughters of the Americas (taking along a Sacramento regent, Fran Gomes - GHI board member and "hugs helper"). They allowed us to exhibit in their main exhibit hall and we were able to make some very meaningful contacts and "get the word out" about our project and efforts for the needy children of our country and the world. As a follow up to that, we sent 3 boxes of layette items to a new pregnancy resource center in McAllen, Texas. They were ecstatic to receive the items we sent. I've just received word that an orphanage in Mozambique will gladly accept our blankets, so we will be collecting them for sending immediately.

We are always looking for opportunities to share our "Gramma's Hugs" love with anyone who needs it. To allow the Elk Grove community to know more about us, we are having an open house on September 27th, here at 8652 Elk Way in Elk Grove, California. It will be an "open to the public" 11am to 3pm, and then we will clear things out and have a potluck early dinner for Hugs Helpers and friends and spouses. "Gramma" has prepared acknowledgement certificates for our "Helpers" and we are expecting the whole day to be one of celebration and information for everyone. "Goodie bags" will be presented to the first 100 people coming; we will have items to sell for fundraising; and an animal donation booth where anyone can, for $5, pick out an animal; pick out a sleeping bag for it; pick out the ribbon to tie it; attach a Gramma's Hugs gift tag and pick the place it will go. We will be boxing little stuffed animals in sleeping bags to be gifts to children at Christmas to the following:
St. John's Women's Shelter, Sacramento, CA
Ronald McDonald House, Sacramento, CA
Door of Faith Orphanage, Baja, Mexico
Family Health Services Clinics, Biloxi, MS
  (our Katrina Relief group)
Ninos de Baja, Portenir, Mexico

We will be sending a large quantity of boxes over the next few months to most of our facilities. This will take a large amount of material, time and money. It would be great if some of you decide Gramma's Hugs should get a "year end" special gift to cover these costs.

Due to lack of extra monies for things like stamps and materials, I have decided to only send two newsletters next year. In the meantime, a new brochure and new letterhead have been created; new luggage tags have been made and donated; new contacts and places to send items are being developed. We anticipate entering another phase of the project- a step UP...to more and more and more being made and sent. We would love to have you help us with this. Please let us know your ideas and feelings about it. Also be sure to let us know of any group or facility that could use our gift of love and hugs!!!~!

I send love and greetings to all of you.
And, always Hugs... "Gramma" Shirley King.
