VOL. 6-1        GRAMMA'S HUGS INTERNATIONAL                JULY 2010

HAPPY NEW YEAR...NEW DECADE!!! We hope it will be a safe and healthy year for everyone.

I hope you all have your running shoes on...
Hello everyone - I mean it - I hope you have some running shoes. GHI is off to a flying start and we wanted to write to you immediately to let you know what is in our immediate plans/future!!!

We intend to continue to send to our various locations/facilities this year. Nothing has changed. BUT, we are adding a new dimension. We are attempting to broaden out a bit; expanding our output of blankets and bags and other items to our already established groups.

SO, to do that, we are taking advantage of a fabulous offer by Ronald McDonald House in Sacramento to use their large conference room to set up a volunteer work program for doing projects for Gramma's Hugs. This is being coordinated by your director, Shirley King, with assistance from Board Member, Linda Wick and Lois Polaschek, the Manager at Ronald McDonald House.

Starting February 9th, 2010, and continuing on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of each month, we will be working at the 49th Ave. location from 9:30-12:30PM.
The schedule has been put on the calendar...

February 9 and 23 - March 9 and 23 - April 13 and 27
(the last date is on the 5th Tuesday because of a schedule problem)

We will be cutting, pinning and stitching belongings bags and toiletry bags. If you have the time and want to volunteer for these projects, please contact either myself at 916-685-9660 or email me at: grammashugs@frontiernet.net, and I will put you on the list. Thank you!!! (If you have scissors, rotary cutters/boards, portable sewing machines that you can bring - that's a special plus)...

We have made a commitment to the work in Kammpala, Uganda, under the directorship of Jim & Kappy Robinette, to provide bags for them to give the children at Christmas. This year they were "entertaining" over 2,000 children - this will take a "bit of doing", so we need to get started immediately. On top of that, we will be distributing these same kinds of bags in other areas, so the amount needed is in the thousands.

Through the generosity of Brenda Schwartz and her decorating warehouse, we have become recipients of her discontinued fabric samples. These make wonderful and beautiful bags!!! Other donation of all kinds of cotton and mixed polyester/cotton fabrics will be very welcome as well!

Also, cording to string in them would be great. And of course, the times to go into the smaller bags are always used and welcomed. Shampoo, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, packs of gum, wrapped candies, sandwich bags, and other items you might have that could be utilized.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Another project that we need to start immediately is the accumulation of blankets to supply and equip the orphanage in S. Africa. This last winter was especially cold. Add to that the increased cost for heating the cottages, and you have children who are freezing cold at night. They need 4 blankets per child to maintain the usual wear and tear. This last winter they tried to have one blanket underneath and only one on top of the children. The weather got down to 16 deg. Fahrenheit...cold! On top of that, we have been trying to send additional blankets and washrags, towels and supplies for the many hundreds of children-head of households in the same general area as the orphanage...the villages around it.

As you can see, the need is overwhelming. Then, of course, we intend to continue taking our blankets to the Elk Grove Food Bank; St. John's Women's Shelter; Lodi Pregnancy Resource Center; Ronald McDonald House and other areas as requested.

Material - either fleece and/or cotton flannel are needed for these blankets. Any size is acceptable; at least one yard or more per piece is needed.

In November 2009 Board Member, Llinda Wick, went with Director, Shirley King, to speak to the Sacramento Chapter of Zonta International. This great organization sponsors and supports various projects to benefit and enhance women the world over. They have designated February as Gramma's Hugs Month and are doing an ingathering of supplies for us!!! This is simply marvelous, and we are truly appreciative of this generous offer of help.

***********************************************************************
The Pacific Alumnus Association of University of Pacific in Stockton, California, has asked to put together a work project for Gramma's Hugs as well. Under the direction of Corrie Martin, who works for the PAA, we will be putting together time to come to "Gramma's Hugs Factory" early this year. This will be terrific... and very welcome.

***********************************************************************
As you can tell, our work is cut out for us, and I feel we can do it by working together!!! We are accepting donations, always; we are always looking for extra hands for knitting, crocheting, sewing, gathering, collecting - any number of areas. don't be afraid to offer or as. Monetary donations help defray costs of printing (done by the director at home) and postage, mail box and internet costs. Mail these to: 8652 Elk Way, Elk Grove, CA 95624. A tax slip will be furnished to you for your taxes.

***********************************************************************
IN 2009 GRAMMA'S HUGS SHIPPED OUT MORE BOXES THAN 2007 & 2008 COMBINED!!! THANK YOU LINDA AND PETER WICK!!! GOD BLESS YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT AND GENEROSITY TO GRAMMA'S HUGS...

Until next time...
